Andrew Abbott grew up surrounded by family and Christianity. He lived with his eleven brothers and sisters on a farm where they travelled to church every Sunday. It was an easy decision to accept Jesus at age thirteen, for Andrew didn't realize the commitment that is entailed with accepting Jesus.
Also at age thirteen Andrew was experiencing what every human alive has gone through or will go through: puberty. It was curiosity that induced him to sneak downstairs to the family computer in the middle of the night to search the word "sex." An unexpected result popped up on the computer, and it became a five-year addiction to porn from there.
When he was eighteen Andrew went to Jamestown, New York to hear his favourite band play. The lead singer spoke to the crowd at one point, saying, "We don't live our lives for God because of what we can do for him, we live our lives for what he has done for us." Andrew realized that his whole life had been wrapped around trying to gain recognition from God and others through ministry work and the appearance of a good life.
It took a long time to gain courage to tell anyone about his addiction. Andrew's present girlfriend became the first to know, and after that Andrew went to her parents for help. The girl's father set up protection on Andrew's computer and eventually became a large influence in Andrew's life. When Andrew shared his story on a Christian radio program he was contacted by churches to speak at their youth groups. Four young men reached out to Andrew about their own porn addictions at the first church that Andrew spoke at, and he has continued to reach people with his incredible story ever since.
